HEALING

People seek help during periods of crisis, times of transition or change, and while navigating the challenges of maintaining health. I believe that the role of a skillful clinician is to provide careful, ongoing assessment and options for effective treatment, taking into consideration a person's culture, gender and life circumstances. The work of therapy is reciprocal. It requires mutual effort on the parts of both the the person seeking help and the one offering treatment. The work is built on a foundation of realistic goals that are an essential part of the first discussion as treatment begins. The goals provide the benchmarks for progress along the way and are revisited at each step in the healing process.

My approach to treatment is person-centered and respectful of the need for individualized care. I have specialized training in sleep and its relationship to psychiatric illnesses which is integrated into all approaches to healing. I provide various treatment options which include medications and psychotherapy, particularly cognitive and behavioral approaches to psychiatric illnesses and associated sleep difficulties.

Symptoms manifest differently between men and women (menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause) and these differences are important to consider because they have a powerful impact on treatment effectiveness. Some of my academic research focused on gender differences in psychiatric illnesses, and this perspective highlights important considerations in the ways in which I approach assessment and treatment.

I believe that compassion and mindfulness are essential elements of healing because in times of illness, people often lose sight of the importance of compassion toward self and mindfulness to their needs during healing. My approach to healing utilizes various forms of treatment in compassionate and mindful ways.

PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY

Individualized Treatment

Psychopharmacology is one tool in the menu of treatment options. While medications can be an important part of a treatment plan, research evidence shows that for many people, the most effective treatment may involve psychotherapy alone or alternatively, a combination of both medication and psychotherapy depending on the severity of symptoms and preference of the person seeking help. Treatment plans are contoured to individual needs, grounded in realistic goals and evidence-based best practices. Collaboration in the process of psychotherapy with or without medications, is essential for the best clinical outcomes.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Individual, Couples & Family

There are many different approaches to psychotherapy. The American Psychiatric Association, the National Institute of Mental Health and other agencies work together to routinely review all available research on the effectiveness of various types of treatment. Based on the findings of this work, recommendations are made about which type of psychotherapy and/or medications are most effective. Depending on the clinical needs of each individual, treatment plans may include a combination of approaches.

SLEEP

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia and Related Sleep-Focused Evaluation/Treatment

Sleep pattern disturbance is nearly a universal experience across psychiatric illnesses. Changes in sleep reflect a number of things including biological and environmental factors. Treatment of sleep disturbances across all of the psychiatric illnesses is essential for the best outcomes. As such, evaluation of sleep is part of the initial assessment and is an important element in all treatment plans. Dr. McEnany has had specialized training in sleep/sleep disorders. His research reflects this area of knowledge and it is a critical dimension of his clinical work.

CONSULTATION

Patients/Families - Clinicians & Academicians

People seek consultation when they need answers to questions or are discerning options for the best choice, based on their needs. Consultation questions are diverse and help to explore options and is available for people seeking treatment, clinicians or educators who want a focused opinion on a specific topic. Not uncommonly, people seeking treatment want to meet for the purposes of reviewing clinical options for treatment. Clinicians from various disciplines may seek consultation for case review. Educators may request an appointment to discuss pedagogical questions in the areas of Dr. McEnany's expertise.

HELPFUL INFORMATION AND RESOURCES

The internet is one of the most readily available sources of information for most of us in the USA and in most places across the globe. The advantages of having such easy access to information are countless. But there are drawbacks to the wealth of data at your fingertips. Simply stated, some of it is inaccurate or incorrect, even misleading. Basing decisions about your health or health care from unreliable sources can be dangerous and place you in a powerfully disadvantaged position.

In an effort to provide you with reliable information, the following links are offered. Content from these links is current and referenced from well-respected sources.

GRIEF AND BEREAVEMENT

Loss is a normal part of life though adjusting to it can be very painful and at times, especially when it is the loss of someone important to you. Grief has a thousand different faces and the course through the experience varies widely. But sometimes the experience of grief becomes debilitating and the ability to function deteriorates, after what would otherwise be considered a normal time after the loss. It raises the question of when does the pain of normal grieving turn into illness? The following links provide some helpful information.

SLEEP AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO HEALTH AND ILLNESS

Sleep has taken the front page of many magazines and journals recently, and the number of articles in the news continues to rise. The reason for the increasing interest in the field is multifaceted: growing research base in the science behind sleep; implications for public safety with sleep deprivation; increased risk for conditions such as weight gain, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer in the absence of adequate sleep. The following links provide some essential information on the topic.

MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH

While it's difficult to talk about American culture as being anything but diverse, it can be said that men in the USA tend to talk less about issues associated with their mental health. Whether that's a vestige of stigma surrounding mental health or not, it is an unfortunate truth. Most of the mental illnesses happen equally in men as well as women. Left unattended, conditions worsen, not unlike diabetes or other health conditions. While men may deal with mental health issues differently than women, the fact remains that conditions such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and others need healing attention. The sites below provide some reliable and rich sources of information for men.
